School Meals

School Meals

Our school meal provision is provided in house.

Our catering team’s aim is to ensure healthy eating for all pupils through the provision of a well balanced school lunch, served in a warm, welcoming dining environment.

A healthy balanced lunch has been demonstrated to improve pupils’ concentration, attention, energy levels and academic performance and as such improve the overall results obtained by pupils.

All school meals meet government nutritional standards however we do have greater freedom over menu choices.  We aim to, in consultation with both parents and pupils, offer what students at Meadowdale would like to eat and will devise menu options based on the needs and wants of our customers, the pupils!

Meals are available at a cost of £2.30 for a main meal and dessert; and £2.36 for a main meal, dessert and glass of juice. The weekly cost is £11.50, although ‘extras’ are available. Please ensure your child’s lunch account is up to date as we can no longer have debts on the lunch account.

Other fruit and sparkling water drinks are available from 40p to 70p and can be bought as ‘extras’.

We know how important it is to create the good eating habits that can last a lifetime, and teach children about the importance to not only their physical well being but how food can affect their mood, temperament and energy levels.

Free School Meals

Free School Meals (FSM) are not provided automatically, they are available to people who are classed as unemployed and receiving a qualifying benefit.

Specific Dietary Needs

If your child has a food allergy and/or specific dietary need then we are able to cater for them.  Please request our ‘Register of Special Diets’ form and return to Mrs Robinson, our Catering Manager as soon as possible.

In order to ensure that all of our children access their full entitlements and do not miss out on any government funded supermarket vouchers during future school holidays, we are encouraging ALL of our parents to complete a free school meals application. It costs you nothing to apply and you might be better off. The only way you will find out whether you qualify is by completing the form online.

What’s in it for me?

Quite simply, if you meet the eligibility criteria, your child might qualify for free school meals**. Also, if the government continues to fund free school meals during the holidays, you will get supermarket vouchers emailed directly to help with food costs.

What’s in it for the school?

You might have heard about something called the ‘Pupil Premium’ that the government introduced some time ago. What this means is that, for every child who is eligible for free school meals, the academy will also receive a sum of money that is then used to make the best possible educational provision for all children. We don’t just receive the money once – we will continue to get this for next few years, so you can see that it is in our interests too. If our parents don’t apply for their entitlements the school will lose thousands of pounds.

I have already completed an application. Can I submit another?

Yes. We want all of our parents to complete the application form irrespective of whether they have done so in the past.

I already receive Free School Meals for my child. Do I need to reapply?

You don’t need to reapply but if you have any children who have joined school in Years Reception to Year 2 since 1st September 2021 please make an application for them.

My child doesn’t want school meals. Can I still fill in the form?

Yes, absolutely. Even if you continue to send in a packed lunch, we will still receive the funding. (Although school meals in Meadowdale Academy are fantastic quality, so why not get your child to try one if he/she hasn’t already). If you are eligible to receive free meals it doesn’t mean that you have to take them. However, the school will still benefit from the Pupil Premium.

Infants [Reception, Year 1 and Y2] get the meals free anyway. Why should I fill in the form?

It is true that all infant children receive universal free school meals. We still need you to complete the form though because it will still benefit the school through additional funding if you do meet the eligibility criteria…. And by returning the application your child will still have the opportunity to get the Argos voucher!

  1. I have decided that I would like to take part. What action do I need to take?
